Prayer Rope (Chotki) 40 knots

A prayer rope serves as an aid to keep a count of the number of repetitions of the "Jesus Prayer", as well a count for prostrations. 

According to tradition in 320 A.D. an angel taught St. Pachomios who was struggling to keep count of prayer, how to tie a special knot which has 9 interwoven crosses, representing the 9 choirs of angels. This ancient practice continues, even today each knot has 9 interwoven crosses, carefully handwoven with prayer.
